I am devastated - while shooting Aucklands Skyline at night my 7d stopped. Died. Refused to do anything at all. No display(s), no reaction to pressing buttons. The last it did was moving my manually focussed frame slightly out of focus. It did that when I simply switched it on - I didn't activate the AF... Battery full, no change after removing battery and backup battery (and putting it back in again, of course).
So, this is a discussion forum. I certainly appreciate condolences but:
Has anyone here encounted something similar and found out what its cause was?
Has anyone experiences with Canon support - especially in New Zealand?
Please excuse any grammar or typing mistakes...
I'll have a bottle of wine now and then I cry myself to sleep.
Yes I did experience it with my 50D. Try removing the battery and re-insert it - it may solve your problem. Once it works, update the firmware. Let me know if it works. Oops, you did say that you reinserted the battery... So try connect it to the computer and try to control the camera using the computer. If it works then clean all contacts in the battery bay and the lens electrical contacts as well.
Thanks, Yossi. Unfortunately, none of the above worked. I replaced both batteries with new/charged ones, I connected it to my PC - nothing. I'll get in touch with Canon Auckland tomorrow and see what they say.
I have brought my 7D to Canon NZ for a repair. It seems to be a PCB in the bottom area of the camera that is broken. It seems not related to any treatment/environment the camera was exposed to. It just broke by itself. On the exact day the German warranty expired...
I might have it back next weekend - for a reasonable amount of money I must say. And so far, Canon NZ was very helpful and knowledgeable.
