Pros: Image quality, construction, AF.

Cons: Nothing when used with the right body.

Opinion: The only addition to the opinions/reviews already written: I use it on both A9 and A7R2. It makes a huge difference! If I am in entomological hunting I use the A9 with which it can lock on to subjects a few cm moved by the wind freehand even at f10 and with little light. Practically a point and shoot, lightning-fast it is sufficiently responsive and fast to maintain focus in very borderline situations; which for a macro is not obvious, especially when you have the subject 5 cm or less from the lens hood. With the A7R2, in macro only in manual because now that it ends with focus breathing the insect is already gone. Therefore more static subjects. Then of course, I prefer the file of this one because it is more "pasty" and natural, but then they are tastes.

Pros: All the good that is said about it in previous reviews and more: colors and three-dimensionality also (and especially?) in video

Cons: The usual: a tripod ring useful in some cases is missing

Opinion: Given that I mainly do videos, this 90 macro combined with the Alpha 6700 surprised me not only for the optical quality but also for the performance of both autofocus and stabilization, even if it is an old project, from 2015. Watch this video, done in autofocus and partly freehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuJMSLmPP5E&t=4s . Just in 2015 the French magazine "Chasseur d'images" said it was surprised to see this lens branded only Sony and not Sony / Zeiss, but I like to think that in any case the contribution of Zeiss know-out, then frequent for Sony, was there. Certainly in this lens I immediately appreciated not only the definition but a considerable three-dimensionality, spatiality or macrocontrast if you prefer, which combined with the rendering of colors really makes you think of the optical qualities of Zeiss. Moreover, if it is not my subjective impression, it seems that in video these qualities are even more evident.

Pros: Sharp, robust, AF-MF ring, AF great to be macro, stabilized.

Cons: It suffers from very noticeable diffraction from f14.

Opinion: It is a macro, so it is likely that it is often used with closed apertures. I had other macro lenses (90 tamron and 100 pentax) and I must say that I almost never encountered diffraction problems before buying this lens. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth. In principle it is a very clear objective, corrected for both distortion and aberrations. Very robust and with a remarkable AF for the category. The change of mode from AF to MF via anelo I found very convenient. At home sony there are not many alternatives for macros, perhaps the sigma 105 but it is not stabilized.... Let's say that for me it's a love-hate relationship.

Pros: Very sharp, beautifully built and weatherproof

Cons: Lack of tripod ring, so more suitable for freehand use

Opinion: I have owned this lens for almost 3 years and it satisfied me, even if it has a very serious lack for me. It is very sharp, rather heavy as I like it and durable. I often photograph with unfavorable weather without any kind of coverage so as not to waste time when I have to shoot. It has taken dust, rain and mud at will and is like new. The thing I like least is the blurred, with closed diaphragms it is too marked and not very delicate for my taste. But this is not a defect, it is something common to all 90 or 100mm macros. I am used to the blur of 180 and 200mm that now unfortunately no one produces anymore. The real flaw for me very serious is the lack of the tripod ring. When I use this lens I have to hook the camera to the tripod, so if I place it horizontally and then I want to shoot vertically I have to unhook the camera to change position. I photograph in very uncomfortable positions and this operation can often become problematic. In addition, something very important for me, with such movements I risk scaring the animals I photograph. This problem led me to use this lens much less in favor of the old 200mm macro nikon, with a more delicate blur and equipped with a tripod ring. With the nikon it takes 2 seconds to turn it vertically together with the camera, plus the system hooked with the ring is much more balanced. I don't understand why the various 100mm lenses don't have them. The 90 remains, however, along with the 35, my first choice when I photograph at night freehand, often in the rain and in places where the tripod is not usable.

Pros: Sharpness (see notes), construction, AF to MF switch and vice versa

Cons: drop in yield to very closed diaphragms, which is not indifferent on a maco

Opinion: Surely a lens with enormous advantages that, however: - must be able to manage in post because to say that it is engraved is little, it has an exaggerated micro-contrast that may not please especially those who make classic portraits. On the other hand, I made the best views ever, it's even better than the 70-200 GM.... up to f13 - I often found myself wanting / having to shoot at f16 and here the rogne begin because the colors go out and the sharpness drops, although in a lesser way than it comes to think from many reviews. However, for a macro, it means a lot.
