Il monumento equestre in primo piano rappresenta Vittorio Emanuele II alla battaglia di San Martino e venne commissionato allo scultore Ercole Rosa da re Umberto I alla morte del padre nel 1878; ma venne collocato nella piazza solo nel 1896 essendo lo scultore morto prima di averlo terminato. Sulla sommità del Duomo, al centro, vediamo la Guglia Maggiore, costruita tra il 1765 e il 1769 su progetto dell'architetto Francesco Croce; e penso che sia superfluo specificare cosa rappresenta la statua dorata in cima ad essa. Dirò solo che è alta quattro metri e che fu realizzata su disegno dello scultore Giuseppe Perego, tra il 1769 e il 1773, in lastre di rame placcate d'oro su un'armatura metallica. Le quattro guglie in facciata recano le statue (da sinistra verso destra) di San Biagio, San Giovanni Battista de La Salle, Sant'Alessandro e San Felice. La stragrande maggioranza delle statue e della guglie del Duomo risalgono al XIX secolo; tuttavia la statua di San Biagio è stata realizzata nel 1962 in sostituzione dell'originale distrutta dai bombardamenti durante la II guerra mondiale. Il cielo scuro, dovuto all'imminenza di un temporale, per contrasto fa apparire più chiaro il marmo di Candoglia con cui è costruita la cattedrale.
