Fermignano di origini romane e fondata sulla sponda del Metauro che l'attraversa, l'antica Castrum Firmignani fu castello del Ducato di Urbino. La città sorge a pochi chilometri dalla Piana di San Silvestro, dove nel 207 a.C. si concluse la Battaglia del Metauro tra Romani e Cartaginesi. Oggi rimane solo un piccolo ma interessante centro storico, che si caratterizza principalmente l'alta torre medievale delle Milizie, la quale domina il monumentale ponte a tre archi. La torre presenta evidenti caratteristiche architettoniche medioevali, ma sorse probabilmente su preesistenti costruzioni di epoca romana. Ebbe certamente una funzione di controllo in un punto focale della viabilità antica e di difesa del borgo ad essa adiacente. Sul ponte venne eretta un'edicola quattrocentesca voluta da Federico da Montefeltro e realizzata sotto la direzione dell'architetto Francesco di Giorgio Martini. La città di Fermignano è la terra natale del Bramante, che qui nacque nel 1444, ed ospitò personaggi illustri nelle sue terre. Torquato Tasso dimorò alle porte della città nel 1578 presso la villa dei Conti Bonaventura.
