Summonte sembra essere stato una scelta strategica per la localizzazione del castello (documentato per la prima volta nel 1094) e della fortificazione del casale. Si può affermare, pertanto, che Summonte sia stato fino agli albori della modernità essenzialmente un presidio militare. L'elemento superstite di tale sistema di fortificazioni è la torre cilindrica a base tronco-conica (fine sec. XIII-inizi sec, XIV ). La torre fu elevata sui ruderi del castello dove probabilmente, abitò la famiglia Malerba che tenne il feudo locale in epoca normanna. Intorno alla metà degli anni novanta, tuttavia, sono state ritrovate le strutture del castello di epoca normanno-sveva in Summonte, a seguito di uno scavo archeologico condotto con la supervisione della Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici di Salerno, Avellino e Benevento. La torre che fino a pochi anni fa si presentava come un rudere, è stata di recente restaurata recuperandone l'apparecchiatura muraria e ricostruendone i solai lignei fino all'ultimo livello, di cui si è trovata traccia.
