La storia iniziò nel 1954, quando il consiglio dei ministri della RDT (Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, la Germania dell'est) decise di far sviluppare un'auto di piccole dimensioni, che non pesasse più di 600 chili, consumasse solo cinque litri e mezzo di benzina ogni 100 chilometri e non costasse più di 4.000 marchi. La carrozzeria era qualcosa di particolare, perché data la carenza di lamiera era prodotta con materiali plastici; proprio per questo motivo oggi quest'auto e chiamata bonariamente "Rennpappe", cartone da Formula 1. Sebbene non soddisfacesse tutti i requisiti, fu incaricata della produzione la fabbrica della "VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerk Zwickau": il primo modello di Trabant, fu presentata alla Fiera di Lipsia; consumava mediamente 6,8 litri ogni 100 chilometri e costava 8.360 marchi. Successivamente la fabbrica produceva tre modelli: la berlina, la cabriolet e la giardinetta; tutte montavano motori a due tempi di 595 cm³ per 25 cavalli.Tra il novembre 1957 e l'aprile 1991, a Zwickau furono prodotte complessivamente 3.051.385 Trabant, in varie versioni. Il nome, che significa all'incirca "compagno", era un omaggio al satellite russo Sputnik lanciato nello spazio nel 1957. Per il fatto che le richieste per avere questa macchina superavano sempre di gran lunga la capacità produttiva, i tempi di attesa per avere una Trabant arrivavano anche a parecchi anni. Nonostante il fatto che avere una "Trabi" conferisse al suo possessore un certo prestigio, le critiche non cessavano mai: derivavano soprattutto dalla rumorosità, dalla fumosità allo scarico e dalle modeste prestazioni della machina. L'ultima versione della Trabant fu prodotta nel 1990, dopo la riunificazione. Aveva più o meno la carrozzeria della versione precedente (la "601", vedi le due foto in alto), ma montava lo stesso motore della Volkswagen Polo.
