Foto presa da Piazza Castello. Questo punto di ripresa è, a mia parere, quello che meglio rende l'idea della maestosità del prospetto, largo circa 210 metri, del castello sulla piazza. Al centro è la Torre del Filarete, progettata dall'architetto Luca Beltrami e realizzata tra il 1901 e il 1905; dopo un'accurata ricerca, effettuata dallo stesso Beltrami, sui documenti e sulle fonti iconografiche della torre precedente, realizzata da Antonio Averulino detto il Filarete nel 1452 e crollata nel 1521. Davanti ad essa vediamo la fontana denominata “Torta degli sposi”, nella quale sono chiusi i getti nella vasca centrale; la qual cosa lascia libera la visuale della torre. A sinistra si nota il Torrione di Santo Spirito, a destra il Torrione del Carmine; entrambi realizzati dall'architetto Bartolomeo Gadio nel 1452. Ribassati prima nel Cinquecento e poi durante l'insurrezione contro gli Austriaci del 1848; l'attuale configurazione dei torrioni è dovuta ai restauri del Beltrami, che li riportò all'altezza originaria utilizzando i disegni del 1800 del Genio Militare francese. Il Torrione del Carmine, per diversi anni adibito a serbatoio dell'acqua potabile, attualmente ospita la Biblioteca d'Arte. Anche le muraglie di cinta tra le torri erano ribassate e in parte demolite. Beltrami riportò anch'esse all'altezza originaria ricostruendo le merlate.
