Le Havre - Museo André Malraux Eugéne Boudin è stato un dei primi paesaggisti francesi a dipingere all'aperto. E' stato un pittore marino, esperto nella resa di tutto ciò che accade sul mare e lungo le sue rive. I suoi pastelli sommessi ed economici raccolsero lo splendido elogio di Baudelaire, e Corot lo chiamo "il Re dei cieli". Nel 1857/1858 Boudin fece amicizia con il giovane Claude Monet, allora solo diciottenne, e lo convinse a rinunciare ai suoi disegni caricaturali adolescenziali e a diventare un pittore di paesaggi, contribuendo ad infondere in lui l'amore per i colori vivaci e il gioco di luce sull'acqua in seguito evidente nei dipinti impressionisti di Monet. I due rimasero amici per tutta la vita e Monet in seguito rese omaggio alla prima influenza di Boudin, che si unì a Monet e ai suoi giovani nella prima mostra degli impressionisti nel 1873, ma non si considerò mai un radicale o un innovatore.
