Cluny è stata un centro di vita spirituale e monastica e una delle potenze ecclesiastiche e temporali dell'epoca feudale. La sua storia iniziò nel 911 quando Guglielmo il Pio, duca d'Aquitania, donò un suo possesso nella valle della Grosne, in Borgogna, agli apostoli Pietro e Paolo, affinché vi si fondasse un monastero benedettino esente da soggezioni a qualsiasi potentato temporale o spirituale e che rispondesse alla sola autorità di Roma. Fu l'inizio di una delle più importanti riforme della storia monastica. La sua grande libertà ed autonomia, la posizione strategica nel Regno di Francia ma vicinissima ai confini con l'impero germanico, il succedersi di 7 abati di altissimo livello segnarono ne favorirono il successo e la trasformazione in un ordine monastico ramificato nell'Europa cristiana, il cui abate era secondo solo al Papa di Roma. Tra alti e bassi, fulgori decadenze e riforme, la sua vita si protrasse fino alla Rivoluzione, quando l'ultimo respiro di una vita già da tempo stanca si spense. Di quell'impero monastico Cluny era la capitale, doveva poter ospitare almeno in certe occasioni, oltre un migliaio di monaci così, tra il X e il XII secolo, si susseguirono tre basiliche abbaziali, chiamate dagli storici Cluny I, II e III (la seconda e la terza coesistettero a lungo. Cluny III fu per secoli, fino alla costruzione dell'attuale basilica di S. Pietro a Roma, la più grande chiesa della cristianità, poi – dopo la Rivoluzione – venduta a tre privati cittadini fu utilizzata a scopo commerciale come cava di pietre e smontata pezzo per pezzo, nonostante l'opposizione della cittadinanza e della municipalità. Io andai per la prima volta a Cluny con un amico nel 1985, in bicicletta. Preso dall'entusiasmo partii per conoscere i suoi monaci ignorando la fine della sua storia ormai decretata da secoli. In quel viaggio scoprii però l'arte romanica e la sua affinità antropologica con il canto gregoriano e si aprì così la strada che mi portò nel tempo ad occuparmi di musica antica professionalmente, a formare una personale biblioteca d'arte ed in seguito alla pratica della fotografia. Cosa rimane di Cluny dopo la sua fine? Innanzitutto le testimonianze della sua storia e della sua influenza in diverse parti d'Europa. Ad esempio, per citare alcune circostanze che accesero il mio interesse per Cluny, la prima attestazione documentata del nome “Brianza” riguarda la donazione all'abbazia borgognona di un terreno situato su quello che oggi si chiama Colle di Brianza. Quando avevo 16 anni conobbi l'allora abate di Pontida, amico di scuola di mio zio, che fu il primo a raccontarmi qualcosa di Cluny perché fu proprio Cluny a fondare Pontida. Non lontano da casa mia, sussiste un'antica chiesa – S. Maria di Calvenzano (alcune fotografie nella mia galleria "Chiese di Milano e del suo territorio" https://www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?t=3207895&l=it ) – anch'essa fondata da Cluny… E mi limito a ciò che ho a portata di mano o che fa parte delle mie radici personali. Dal punto di vista architettonico quel che rimane a Cluny – due torri del grande transetto della basilica e alcuni edifici di varia epoca – costituiscono oggi la sede un bellissimo museo che conserva reperti della storia dell'abbazia. Inoltre sussiste tutta una serie di piccole e grandi chiese, soprattutto in Borgogna, che testimoniano l'influenza stilistica di Cluny II e III, e che anticamente furono affiliate al grande ordine o ne subirono l'influenza culturale e spirituale. Col tempo ne darò conto fotografico qui su Juza. L'immensa basilica era costituita da un avancorpo – il nartece – grande da solo come una chiesa, affiancato da due torri di cui sussistono i basamenti, seguito dal corpo a croce latina a 5 navate, tagliato non da uno ma da due transetti (il transetto è il braccio orizzontale della croce), uno grande, l'altro più piccolo, il tutto coronato all'esterno da una serie di torri di cui sussistono le due che si vedono in fotografia. Al di là dei transetti si sviluppava il raffinatissimo gioco di spazi del “santuario” con il deambulatorio, le cappelle radiali e le absidi che esternamente inscenavano una splendida figura a scalare che ancora si ammira per esempio nella basilica di Paray-le-Monial. La fotografia che pubblico mostra il braccio sud del transetto grande, l'unico corpo della chiesa ancora sussistente dalla base alle volte. La splendida torre ottagonale, chiamata campanile dell'Acqua benedetta, è formata da un basamento contraffortato e da due piani ornati. Il primo piano è aperto in ciascun lato da una monofora inserita in una tripla arcata cieca; nel secondo le monofore diventano bifore affiancate da arcate cieche, il tutto coronato da archetti pensili lombardi, molto restaurati. La torre ottagonale è affiancata dalla più piccola torre dell'Orologio, a pianta quadrata. Il tutto dà un senso di grandiosità e si rimane attoniti se con la fantasia si integra quel che si vede con quel non si vede più. La foto è una panoramica ottenuta sfruttando diverse posizioni di decentramento dell'obiettivo. #chiese #Romanico #ArchitetturaRomanica
