L'Eremo di S. Cataldo incastonato nella roccia granitica, da oltre un millennio protegge la piccola comunità di Cottanello. Le sue origini si fanno risalire al X secolo, periodo in cui i monaci Benedettini lo utilizzarono come rifugio o di eremitaggio. L'Eremo dedicato a S. Cataldo Vescovo di Rachau e di Taranto vissuto nel VII secolo d.C., custodisce all'interno dell'originaria cappella, il suo affresco più antico risalente al XII sec. L'affresco in stile Bizantino, raffigura il Cristo benedicente su un trono gemmato affiancato ai due lati dai dodici apostoli, sei dei quali riconoscibili grazie a elementi che li caratterizzano, come ad esempio San Pietro con le chiavi. Importante è il simbolo visibile sulla gamba destra del Cristo, un TAU forse apposto da San Francesco, quando tra il 1217 ed il 1223 sostò a Cottanello. L'affresco del Redentore venne alla luce solo nel 1944, quando le truppe tedesche in ritirata, fecero saltare il ponticello sottostante la chiesa. L'Eremo miracolosamente rimase integro, ma lo scoppio screpolò l'affresco raffigurante una veduta di Cottanello, così com'era nel XVII secolo, sotto il quale si celava il prezioso dipinto. La cappella è stata decorata inoltre con affreschi realizzati tra il XV e il XVII secolo che rappresentano santi vescovi e due madonne con un bambino, mentre la volta a crociera con scene tratte dalla Genesi raffiguranti il peccato originale e la cacciata di Adamo ed Eva dal paradiso terrestre.
