In Italia, soprattutto nei mesi estivi, è facile imbattersi in splendidi dipinti di gessetto che abbelliscono le vie e piazze del Paese. A dar vita a tali opere d'arte sono i cosiddetti “Madonnari”. I Madonnari italiani portano avanti un'antica forma d'arte la cui origine risale al XVI secolo. Stiamo parlando di artisti itineranti che viaggiavano in tutto il Paese, lavoravano sui numerosi monumenti costruiti nel periodo del Rinascimento e, con la loro visione artistica, aiutavano i costruttori a immaginare i progetti degli architetti disegnando incisioni o intere facciate a terra proprio a tal fine. Quando poi il lavoro veniva completato, dovevano trovare un altro modo per guadagnarsi da vivere e molto spesso ricreavano i dipinti delle chiese sui marciapiedi raffigurando, per la maggior parte dei casi, uno dei soggetti preferiti dell'epoca: la Madonna. Da qui il nome “Madonnari”. Questi artisti itineranti si spostavano da una provincia e da una città all'altra secondo il calendario delle festività locali. Unendosi ai festeggiamenti, infatti, riuscivano a guadagnarsi da vivere grazie alle persone che si fermavano a osservarli e che gettavano qualche moneta se il lavoro dell'artista era di loro gradimento e ancora oggi è così. I madonnari sono valenti artisti di strada che trasformano pezzi di pavimentazione urbana in veri e propri capolavori d'arte, che restano apprezzabili fino a quando la pioggia non li lava via. L'arte dei madonnari è quindi un'arte "sacrificio" anche per il fatto che i pittori di strada compiono nel dipingere chini sull'asfalto sfumando i colori con i polpastrelli. Disegnano su asfalto con gessetti colorati, perciò non necessitano di grandi attrezzature, cavalletti o tele ma solo di spazi dove potersi esprimere.-----"Chi lavora con le sue mani è un lavoratore.
