Pantalica costituisce uno dei più importanti luoghi protostorici siciliani. Il sito si trova su un altopiano, circondato da canyon formati nel corso dei millenni da due fiumi, l'Anapo e il Calcinara, che hanno determinato l'orografia caratteristica della zona. L'altopiano così come le vallate sottostanti sono delle importanti zone naturalistiche. Nella prima metà del XIII secolo a.C. tutti gli insediamenti costieri scomparvero quasi all'improvviso per l'arrivo in Sicilia dei Siculi e di altre popolazioni italiche. La popolazione indigena abbandonò la fascia costiera e cercò rifugio in impervie e disagevoli zone montane, scelte perché rispondenti ad esigenze di difesa, riunendosi in grossi agglomerati. Nel 728 a.C. venne fondata Megara Iblea, ma la successiva nascita ed espansione di Siracusa determinò la distruzione della nuova città che il re Hyblon concesse ai megaresi e probabilmente i Siracusani distrussero anche il regno di Pantalica, essendosi il dominio della polis espanso sino all'entroterra, con la fondazione di Akrai nel 664 a.C. Di questa epoca restano le vestigia del palazzo del Principe o Anaktoron, nonché la presenza di una vasta necropoli di ben 5.000 tombe a grotticella artificiale, scavate nella roccia. Dopo lunghi secoli di silenzio, Pantalica tornò ad essere abitata nel corso dell'VIII e IX secolo D.C. dai Bizantini, rifugiatisi nel luogo come estrema difesa di fronte all'invasione e alla conquista araba della Sicilia. Sfruttando e ampliando le grotte delle necropoli preesistenti, essi costruirono abitazioni e luoghi di culto rupestri e questa foto è stata scattata proprio da una di queste 'dimore'.
